Granola oats provides a healthy amount of fiber, iron, sodium, potassium, protein and other healthy nutrients to the body while also containing stuff that isn’t good for the health which includes high sugar, high calorie count etc.

These are the few things you should keep in mind while purchasing or eating granola –

1) Keeping an eye on the sugar – The best advice would be to go for 8 grams or less per serving. Higher sugar cans usually have fancy or healthier sounding names such as Evaporated cane juice, molasses, brown rice syrup, oat syrup solids—those are all sugar sources and it’s best to avoid them.

2) Watch for the amount of calories – Healthier granolas have less than 200 calories per ¼-cup serving, 270 calories per ⅓-cup serving, or 400 calories per ½-cup serving, says Melissa O’Shea, MS, RD, the director of nutrition at Exhale Spa.

3) Eating under control – Make sure to eat granola in limited amount of quantities rather than filling out the whole bowl with milk and granola at once. Try to mix it with other stuff such as your greek yogurt or oatmeal.

4) Cut the fat – Granola’s usually conatins heart healthy unsaturated fats. But the amount adds up which could get unhealthy. Look for granola that have between 2 and 3 grams of fat per 1/4-cup serving.

5) Source the oils. Many granola varieties list palm oil and hydrogenated oils on their ingredient list. With their high saturated fat levels, these oils aren’t doing your heart any favors. Small-batch companies like Purely Elizabeth and Early Bird swap these for healthier alternatives like organic coconut oil and extra-virgin olive oil.

6) Avoid Fillers – Even top of the shelf brands will include fillers such as inulin or soy protein isolate. There aren’t going to help you in any way possible as their name suggests they are called fillers. One other rule you should keep in mind when shopping for food is any ingredient you need a dictionary for is not good for your health it is just for filling the label.
